How John Deere Got Started
The company started when John Deere (who was born in Rutland, Vermont in 1804) moved to Grand Decatur, Illinois in 1836 to escape bankruptcy. He was already an established blacksmith when he opened his first shop in the area, which was where he worked as a general repairman for people living in the village. He also manufactured tools (such as pitchforks and shovels) for people in the area, but that was just a start. The one thing that set him apart was his self-scouring steel plow, which was invented in 1837 when John Deere fashioned a Scottish steel saw blade into a plow.
Most farmers back then used iron or wooden plows to which the rich Midwestern soil tended to stick. The smooth-sided steel plow that John Deere invented solved this problem and helped with the migration into the American Great Plains in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Back then, a lot of products were made when they were ordered. This way of doing business was very slow, which John Deere realized was not going to be a viable business model. He decided to manufacture plows before he put them up for sale, which not only allowed his customers to see what they were buying, but also allowed them to purchase the product right away. That was when word of his products started to spread.
Now, John Deere manufactures a broad range of products and is considered to be the largest manufacturer of agricultural equipment in the world. Some of the agricultural products they offer include, but may not be limited to:
- Tractors.
- Combine harvesters.
- Cotton harvesters.
- Balers.
- Planters and seeders.
- Silage machines.
- Sprayers.
