Located in Duval County, Freer is a town with a population of approximately 2,800 people. Like Sweetwater (which is in the heart of Nolan County), it holds an annual rattlesnake roundup in March. The first oil well in the State of Texas was built in 1860, and it was located in Freer. It was built after oil was discovered in Titusville, Pennsylvania, but the well was unproductive. In 1907, oil was discovered again in Duval County (which was six years after Spindletop near Beaumont).
The town of Freer has done several improvements in recent years. One of them is the construction of a new Technical Center and Fine Arts Building at Freer ISD High School. They’re also planning to build a new Border Patrol Station in the area, which is a complex project that will require work from people in a variety of different trades (such as concrete, masonry, and carpentry). This new facility will be built on a 45-acre site that will include places for administration, processing, and holding.
